Allegany State Park has amazing camping.  Allegany has 3 campgrounds- Cain Hollow, Red House Tents, and Diehl. Each area is beautiful and wooded, the perfect camping atmosphere. Cain Hollow is the main camping area and Diehl (pronounced “deal”) and Red House are smaller campgrounds with a mixture of regular sites and cabins.

Campsites

My personal favorite is Diehl because it is smaller and not as popular as Cain Hollow. However, it also has the drawback of only having one bathroom for the whole area, which is located at the entrance to the campground. It’s a long walk from the furthest points of the campground.

Update: They added a porta potty at the end of the campground, so guests at the far end of the campground don’t have to hike so far. Also new are the bear boxes that have been installed to protect guest food from bears and other wildlife. You will be asked to sign a form stating that you will not feed the wildlife. They take it very seriously at Allegany.

Cain Hollow is a much bigger campground but the sites are still really amazing and most are very secluded.

Diehl is a lot harder to locate in the dark than Cain Hollow. It took us several attempts to find Diehl the first time we stayed there. We were anticipating a big sign like the one at Cain Hollow and we couldn’t seem to find it. The sign for Diehl is small and can go completely unnoticed, especially at night.

Choosing a Campsite

I found a website, New York State Campsite Photos, that has a number of the New York State Campgrounds listed with pictures of every site available. This is a great tool when you have to make reservations online. It has helped me pick some really great sites.

Cabins

There are lots of cabins in the park that are winterized and can be used year-round. These cabins are a good choice if you aren’t quite ready for tent camping. Whether you decide to tent camp or stay in a cabin, it is important that you deal with your food and trash properly. This is bear country and there are black bears in the park. You need to take precautions and not attract the bears to your site. Don’t leave food and trash lying around and do not burn food and trash in your campfire.

Fully Furnished Cabins

There are several fully furnished cabins in the park that come with a refrigerator, microwave, oven, and coffee maker. They also have full bathrooms complete with their own showers. These are perfect for families who are quite up for roughing it.

Additional Information

Allegany is one of my favorite places to camp. It is really beautiful and natural. The campsites are large and secluded. I always feel so much closer to nature when I am in Allegany. Like any other campground in NYS, you can not transport your firewood in, due to insects that are detrimental to certain local tree life. Firewood can be purchased at the camp store in the park. It isn’t a fantastic deal. If you are able to purchase wood outside the park, you might find a better deal.

Know Before You Go

  • We found Allegany State Park remarkably bug free in the middle of a majorly buggy summer. There were mosquitos but it was minimal compared to what we were dealing with at home.
  • Make sure you are prepared to keep your food in animal-proof container or take advantage of the bear boxes on site.
  • There are places in the park where there is no cell service. We didn’t have any service at the campgrounds.
  • Dogs are allowed (no more than 2) but rabies vaccination varication is due upon registration.
