Scotts Bluff

I am constantly on the lookout for new and unique places, hidden gems and such, to visit, and I think this place fits the bill nicely, especially if you enjoy visiting the breathtaking marvels of Lake Ontario, lake bluffs. Although Scotts Bluff is one of the smaller of the Lake Ontario Bluffs, that is, in some ways, what makes it so charming. You can enjoy the same beauty as the bigger bluffs, as well as the beach, and the lake without the massive crowds.

Viewing The Bluff From Above

Scotts Bluff

From the small parking area, it is a short and easy walk (along the mowed path) to the top of the Bluff. Pay attention and watch your step here, as there are some very steep drop offs. You can’t walk along the cliff any further than the first few feet of the bluff.

Trail To The Bottom

Scotts Bluff

The trail to the bottom is quite treacherous. You will pass the trail down when you go to the viewing area at the top of the Bluff. You will need to backtrack. Be warned, the trail is very narrow, steep, and lined with thorn bushes and often covered in ice in the winter. Making it a bit of a challenge to reach the bottom. If you aren’t an angle hiker or have the proper gear, I wouldn’t attempt a jaunt to the bottom. (I went down on my bottom to keep from falling.) Going back up was ironically easier than going down.

Please note: I don’t recommend bringing young children to Scotts Bluff. This can be a dangerous place for young kids.

If you hike down to the beach, you do so at your own risk. We don’t encourage dangerous activity or behavior.

Walking The Beach

Scotts Bluff

This area backs up to the Lakeshore Marshes Wildlife Management Area, and a separate body of water sits behind the beach. This is an extremely beautiful area, even in the winter when we visited. This part of the beach is very different from the rest; the section that backs up to the Lakeshore Marshes is sandy.

Scotts Bluff

Including the stretch of beach that is part of the Lakeshore Marshes, there is about a mile of beach to explore. The bluffs are beautiful from the bottom. Since this is a bit of a hidden gem, the beach is usually empty.

If you decide to swim here, you do so at your own risk.
