Hamden Covered Bridge

Hamden Covered Bridge is more than just a visit to a covered bridge, there is a really pretty park that surrounds the bridge on both sides. The Catskills are one of the few places in New York State where you can see a covered bridge. In Fact, the majority of New York State’s covered bridges are located there. Visiting one of these historic bridges is like stepping back in time to a simpler time. These bridges are impressive, considering the tools and technology the builders had to work with.

Hamden Covered Bridge

The Hamden Covered Bridge is not quite the longest of the covered bridges in New York, but it’s pretty close. This bridge is a whopping 128 feet across as it spans the West Branch of the Delaware River. The Hamden Covered Bridge was built by Robert Murray in 1859 in long panel truss style. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. The bridge was renovated in 2000. This bridge has a little more traffic than some of the other bridges we visited in the Catskills. If you decide to visit Hamden Covered Bridge, pay close attention to the traffic if you decide to walk across the bridge.

Hamden Park

In addition to the beautiful bridge is a lovely park that visitors can enjoy. There are gardens and a replica of a covered bridge with several wooden chairs for people to relax and take in the beauty of the park around them. Several wide, grassy paths wind through the park that runs along the river. If you are on the other side of the bridge, there are actually steps leading down to the water. If you are interested in the history of the area, there are placards at the park that will tell you everything you could ever want to know. There are several picnic tables around the park to use on a sunny afternoon.

  1. I got married on that bridge. And my ex-husband was the engineer responsible for the renovation.
