Huckleberry Swamp

Huckleberry Swamp is a little-known hidden gem in the heart of Wayne County. The nature preserve covers approximately 79 acres of wetland. A wooden boardwalk provides safe, dry access to swampland that is normally inaccessible to most people.

Visiting Huckleberry Swamp

Huckleberry Swamp

This is a great place to bring children to learn about wetlands and the environment. The dirt trails are well-groomed, and a wooden boardwalk makes up much of the trail. This is a very stroller-friendly park. There are no fires allowed in this park, and this is a carry-in/carry-out park.

Although this park is beautiful, it is still a swamp. There are lots of mosquitos here, and they can be intense. It is important to bring some bug repellant.

Animals at Huckleberry Swamp

Huckleberry Swamp has a multitude of wildlife. From snakes, frogs, turtles, squirrels, chipmunks, mice, beavers, and raccoons, all sorts of animals call this swamp home. It is an absolute haven for bird watchers. We saw so many varieties of birds who took no notice of us at all.

The trail was quiet, and the wildlife was active as we wandered the park. Any of the animals we encountered paid us no mind and kept on about their business. The walk here is gorgeous and extremely peaceful. There were some unique plants in the swamp as well. We found a buttonbush, a plant with white ball flowers, which are interesting enough, related to coffee plants.

This park does not allow dogs.

Fairy Houses at Huckleberry Swamp

Huckleberry Swamp

Another trail is attached to the swamp trail, with many fairy houses on either side. This is a beautiful trail through the woods. When we recently returned, we saw the remains of some of the fairy houses, but they looked like the fairies might have moved out. I’m not sure if the houses are repaired annually or not. However, the dilapidated fairy houses didn’t detract from the sheer beauty of this trail.

Beware: This part probably had the worst mosquito problem of the entire swamp. We didn’t wear repellent when we came and spent a lot of time trying to stay ahead of the ravenous mosquitoes. With repellent, this part is just charming.
