There are many small, unappreciated spots of idyllic beauty in Saratoga Springs, such as this lovely park. Even during a busing summer afternoon, this park was a welcome break from the crowds visiting Saratoga Springs. We came to High Rock Park to find the mineral springs but were enchanted with the park’s beauty. This park is home to the original spring in Saratoga Springs, as well as a 9/11 monument made from the steel beams from the towers of the World Trade Center.

Enjoying the Park

High Rock Park has numerous amenities, including picnic tables and pavilions. The park is long rather than deep, so most everything is right along the road. There are several gardens and benches set up in pretty spots where visitors can relax and take in the loveliness of the park.

Mineral Springs

One of the big draws to Saratoga Springs is the mineral springs. There are 21 mineral springs in Saratoga Springs, each with its own particular supposed medicinal cure. Whether you believe in the power of magical waters, everyone should try the water at least once. Let me pre-warn you; they are varying degrees of disgusting. There is evidence that water does actually have medical benefits.

The Governor Spring is the very first of Saratoga Springs. Legend says that the Native Americans visited this particular spring, called the “medicine spring of the great spirit,” around 700 years ago. The earliest documentation of the healing power of High Rock Springs was Sir William Johnson, who was injured at the Battle of Lake George. Members of the Mohawk Tribe carried him to High Rock, and the waters gave him a miraculous recovery, and thus the healing lore began.

There are two mineral spring fountains at High Rock Park, the Governor, and the Peerless. The Governor is named for Governor Charles Evans Hughes, who signed a bill protecting the springs.

Farmers Market

During the summer months, the pavilions at High Rock Park are home to a bi-weekly farmers market. Saturday mornings from 9 am – 1 pm and Wednesday afternoons from 3 pm – 6 pm.

9/11 Memorial

Also located in High Rock Park is a memorial to the victims of the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001. The monument is made from steel beams found in the debris of the fallen towers.

Getting to High Rock Park

The only problem with this High Rock Park is the parking. There really isn’t a parking lot designated for the park, so visitors must park alongside the road, across the street.
