On a trip to explore the Thousand Islands and the St Lawrence River, we happened to stumble upon Kring Point State Park quite by accident, and it was such a great find. I fell in love with this park instantly because it is truly gorgeous. The park is on a peninsula and is nearly surrounded by water. Almost every campsite is on the water or has a view of the water. The campground isn’t large compared to some of the other New York State Park campgrounds. There are only 93 tent sites and 8 cabins.

Features of Kring Point State Park

One of the things that made Kring Point State Park really stand out is the topography. The park is rocky and hilly, with a jagged coastline that curves in and out, creating a really peaceful and beautiful setting for camping. Kring Point State Park is basically for camping. There is a small boat launch and dock as well as a small beach. My favorite part of Kring Point State Park was Morgan Island, a little island connected to the peninsula by a walking bridge. It has its own small dock, restrooms, and a pavilion. This is a beautiful spot and with lots of places for great photo opportunities.

Morgan Island

Morgan Island is a magnificent place, and we had the pleasure of having the entire island to ourselves. A hiking trail runs the island’s length with little offshoots that led down to the water. The island isn’t huge, but it really is peaceful and lovely. I could have sat beside the St. Lawrence River forever. I would also imagine the fishing here is quite good. The water was crystal clear. What I think I really like the most about this park, really this area of New York, is the huge rocks. The rocks stretch out into the water and really add incredible rustic beauty to the Island.

Camping at Kring Point

Kring Point has some of the best camping in the Thousand Islands, with many of its campsites right on the water. The rocky terrain does limit the type of camping on each spot. Some of the sites are strictly tenting sites, including some that are walk-in only. However, there are a large number of sites that can accommodate RVs. What you won’t find at Kring Point is a lot of privacy between campsites. The park is pretty much wide open.

There are 8 cabins at Kring Point of varying sizes. They are right on the water and guest can enjoy all the benefits of camping without having to really rough it.

Boating

This is an excellent place for boating. There is a concrete ramp and multiple boat slips for overnight docking (for an extra fee). There is also a great sand beach here too.

Reservations

As there are a limited number of campsites at Kring Point State Park, I recommend making a reservation as soon as possible. The Thousand Islands is a very popular vacation destination, and this particular campground is only a few miles from Alexandria Bay. If you know when you want to visit, I advise making your reservations mid-spring, especially for the popular summer months.

Choosing a Campsite

I found a website, New York State Campsite Photos, that has a number of the New York State Campgrounds listed with pictures of every site available. This is a great tool when you have to make reservations online. It has helped me pick some really great sites.
