Everyone loves visiting weird, strange, and unusual roadside attractions and this is a great one, “The World’s Smallest Church.” Now that might not sound exciting enough to make you jump in the car and hit the road. What if I told you this chapel is situated in the middle of a small pond, making it a really lovely sight?

I had seen little snippets about this unusual chapel here and there but didn’t know much about it. One day we found ourselves in the northern Syracuse area, so we decided to check it out.

This chapel is really charming not just because of its diminutive size, less than 30 square feet, but because of the way it is sitting in the middle of a pond. It really is an idyllic scene. I can definitely see why couples choose this spot as a quaint wedding venue. Although, I have seen that the pond does get very green with algae at certain times of the year.

Cross Island Chapel was built in 1989 and is considered a true church. In order for a building to truly be considered a church, some sort of religious rite has to be performed there. This is a non-denomination church. Marriages, as well as other services, have been performed here, however, the chapel can only accommodate 3 people at most. Therefore all wedding guests need to watch from the shore or from a boat on the pond.

Not sure where the name “Cross Island” came from as there doesn’t appear to be an island in sight. Although there is a cross standing above the water a few feet from the chapel. The chapel is supported above the water on wooden piers and boards. The only way to reach the chapel is by boat. There is a small rickety dock on the shore. The chapel is open to the public, by appointment. If you would like to make an appointment to visit call – 315-264-4257.

Directions: I-90 exit 33. West on Rte 365. Turn right on Sconondoa Rd.
