The Sodus Bay Lighthouse has quite a bit of history behind it. The lighthouse and accompanying residence were built in 1825. The first lighthouse keeper was Ishmael D. Hill. This lighthouse began to fall into disrepair and the current stone lighthouse was built in 1871.
The view from the lighthouse yard is beautiful, even when we first visited in winter. We visited on a brisk Saturday morning in March and had the place all to ourselves. The museum wasn’t open, but we enjoyed walking around the property. We have returned numerous times, and this is an excellent place to get a sunrise or sunset picture. Also, when we visited on a lovely Saturday evening in June, we almost had the grounds to ourselves. This is a great place to enjoy a quiet, romantic date night.
In addition to having a great maritime museum, the Sodus Bay Lighthouse host a number of events throughout the summer, such as a concert series held on the property, as well as an art show, 5K race, and an Independence Extravaganza. The History Alive lectures that
This is a beautiful place to peacefully enjoy the beauty of Lake Ontario. The beach is fun for little ones to explore, with supervision of course.
Winter at Sodus Bay Lighthouse
Although the lighthouse museum is closed, the property is still open to visitors in the wintertime. The view of Lake Ontario from the lawn of the lighthouse is incredible at any time of the year, but in the winter, seeing the frozen lakeshore is spectacular. Visitors can also see the Sodus Pier and Lighthouse in the distance. If you decide to explore here, make sure you are wearing proper footwear (microspikes or yaktrax) as the grounds can be icy.

The Sodus Bay Lighthouse Museum is opening for the 2022 season on May 27, 2022, through October 10, 2022. The hours of operation from May 27, 2022 through Labor Day, September 5, 2022, are Sundays from 12-5 pm, and Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10 am-5 pm. We will be open on Monday Holidays from 12-5 pm. From Labor Day, September 5, 2022, to Columbus Day, October 10, 2022, will be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 12-5 pm.
