The Genesee Riverway, also known to locals as Turning Point Park, is located in the town of Charlotte in Rochester, NY. It is a beautiful place to take a family walk. This is the perfect excursion for people who prefer to limit their hiking to paved walkways rather than trudge through muddied trails. This hike is perfect for families with young children because of the even boardwalk, which is wide and stroller-friendly.

Wildlife at Genesee Riverway

It is also teeming with wildlife such as great blue herons, turtles, swans, ducks, and fish. It is an entertaining walk with older children, who can spend their time pointing out the different varieties of wildlife. My kids always identified this place as “the boardwalk with all the swans.” This is the one place I can guarantee you will see lots of wildlife, making it a great place to bring kids who are animal lovers.

Biking at the Genesee Riverway

This trail also doubles as a bike path. If you are looking for a  scenic waterway path to ride your bike on without the danger of falling in, then the Genesee Riverway perfect for you. I personally like this path due to the low traffic and the fences that run the length of the path surrounded by water. I am a clumsy rider, and I know that I would inevitably be taking a swim in a place such as the Erie Canal. So fences are my friends.

Stroll along the Water

Another great feature of the Genesee Riverway is how open it is and the enjoyment of strolling along the water. There are usually boats on the water and of course, the before mentioned wildlife. Added bonus…we did not find it to be buggy at all, especially during a particularly wet summer, where just stepping outside your house turned you into an all-you-can-eat buffet for the mosquitoes.

An Easy Going Destination

The hill to and from the parking lot on one end is very steep, so if you are riding a bike and are not a particularly graceful rider like me, you might prefer to walk that bit. Otherwise, this is a fantastic path for families, whether on foot or bicycling. It’s beautiful, peaceful, and just an all-around nice excursion.
