Very few places leave me at a loss for words, Olcott, a small picturesque hamlet on the shores of Lake Ontario, is one of these places. Even though our last visit was during the Winter, I still thought this town was one of the most appealing towns we have visited in New York State. Olcott is an exquisite community that has so much to offer to those who decide to visit the charming town. Some might consider this town to be a tourist trap town but I really love our visits here, regardless of the time of year.

Olcott is a hamlet in the town of Newfane, although most people just refer to this area as Olcott. While there are many towns that offer entertainment on Lake Ontario, Olcott is one of the few that is straight-up 100% family-friendly. There is a “Coney Island” feel to this lakeshore town that will be sure to have you returning again and again. This isn’t your typical Upstate New York, that only has activities, festivals, and attractions running only through the summer. There is always something going on in Olcott that will make you want to visit all year long.
Krull Park
Krull Park is a massive 325-acre park and has everything you can imagine for every season. The Olcott Beach section of the park is the site of the original Olcott Beach Hotel. This portion of the park has a sandy beach as well as a tiered grass area where people can relax and enjoy the sunshine. The rest of this enormous park has soccer, laccase, and baseball fields, as well as horseshoe pits, and tennis and basketball courts.
The splash park is the perfect place to bring the little one on a hot summer afternoon. In the winter, you can take advantage of the two ice rinks and then warm up in the warming house that has vending machines and restrooms. Throughout the summer tons of family-friendly events are held in the park such as the Pirate Festival, Celtic Festival, the Labor Day Weekend Car Show, and dog shows. In August, enjoy Sunday afternoon music concerts.
Lakeview Village Shoppes
This quaint boardwalk has an assortment of shops selling all sorts of gifts, souvenirs, and yummy treats. There is a farmers’ market on Friday nights. The colorful buildings are an inviting beacon when you are strolling down the main street. Pull up a chair in the courtyard or along the Lake and enjoy live music or wine tastings from the Niagara Wine Trail.
I really love the Lakeview Village Shoppes. The boardwalk is set right on the Lake (next to the lighthouse) and makes a great place to get a snack, kick up your heels, and enjoy the view.
Olcott Lighthouse
The Olcott Lighthouse is an outstanding place to view the sunset. This is lighthouse is a replica of the original Olcott Lighthouse that once sat in the harbor. The lighthouse is a fantastic location for family pictures. The lawn at the lighthouse is perfect for lounging and relaxing on the pristine shores of Lake Ontario.
Olcott Beach Carousel Park
The Olcott Beach Carousel Park is a refreshing blast from the past. Amusement parks are often built for young adults, rather than little kids. That is not the case with the Olcott Beach Carousel Park. This park is perfect for young children. My kids loved this park when they were little and you can’t beat the price of $0.25/ride.
The park charges no admission for entry and features all sorts of rides especially geared toward young children. The Olcott Beach Carousel Park has been recently renovated but still maintains its previous charm. The Carousel is a two-row 1928 Hershell-Spillman. There are 5 other vintage kiddie rides such as a kiddie car ride, sky fighter, rocket swing ride, Ferris wheel, and boat ride.

Ye Olde Log Cabin
The cabin that sits in Krull Park is a pioneer cabin that was originally built in 1888. Sadly the cabin fell into disrepair over the years and by 1956, what was left that hadn’t been looted was turned over to the Niagara County Historical Society Museum. The cabin has been renovated and is now open to the public as a museum.
Open Friday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., June 1 through Sept. 9.
On the Water
When visiting Olcott, you can’t help but feel the influence that Lake Ontario plays in this lovely town. There is an enormous harbor that has a huge number of boat slips.
Fishing
Olcott is known for its excellent year-round freshwater fishing. Whether you are new to fishing or a seasoned angler, there is a perfect fishing experience waiting for you. You can catch largemouth bass, perch, and trout in Eighteen-Mile Creek. While you can reel in some massive fish from Lake Ontario such as muskie, salmon and steelhead, walleye, and maybe even lake sturgeon.
Whether you are fishing the pier or wading through nearby Eighteen-mile creek during Salmon season. you will need a fishing license. You can either obtain one online or through many of the marinas and bait shops in Olcott.
Boat Launches
Town of Newfane Marina – 5834 W Main Street, Newfane. This is a large marina that has three double launch ramps that are capable of launching everything from rowboats to large cruisers. Visitors can purchase fuel that is modified specifically for marine use.
Launch rates are $8.00 for regular boats. Canoes, jet skis, and rowboats are $4.00. The fee for overnight transient dockage is $1.25 per foot. Reduced rates for launching for seniors (aged 62+).
Amenities include: an easy-access pump-out station, boat wash facility, public restrooms with handicap-accessible showers, pay washers and dryers, a fish cleaning station, and a large shelter and picnic tables with charcoal grills. Ice, soda, and snacks are also available at the Marina. Bike rentals are available for exploring the town.
Charter Boats
If you are looking for a professional fishing guide, you might want to consider hiring a charter boat. Some of these offer private cruises or you can join a scheduled excursion depending on your budget.

Bye’s Popcorn – 1667 Lockport Olcott Rd, Olcott
This small popcorn stand has been called the best popcorn in the world. Bye’s Popcorn has been an Olcott Tradition since 1923. Make sure you stop by and grab yourself a bag of their famous caramel popcorn.
The Prickly Pear Bakery and Eatery – 5959 Main Street, Olcott
Along with delectable entrees (which you can dine in or order to go.) try their delicious cupcakes that come in also of unique and yummy flavors and frostings. Check their Facebook page often as their specials change daily.
Calhoon’s Pub – 2598 Main St, Newfane
You can get excellent seafood and fish frys at this pub, as well as live music.
Mariner’s Landing Restaurant – 1540 Franklin St., Olcott
This is another great restaurant that serves seafood, pasta, and sandwiches. They have outdoor seating with a view of the Lake available during the warm weather.
Live Edge Brewing Company – 2100 Coomer Rd., Burt
Enjoy local beers and a tantalizing menu of unique burgers, sliders, and all sorts of fun appetizers.
Cafora’s Pizza and Pasteria – 2885 Main Street, Newfane
If you like authentic Italian food, you will love this restaurant. You can also order from their extensive list of appetizers, pizzas, and subs.
Gordie Harper’s Bazaar – 3333 Lockport-Olcott Rd., Newfane
This is the best breakfast spot in town. While you are there, check out the bazaar for unique gifts.
Niagara Wine Trail
Black Willow Winery – 5565 West Lake Road, Burt
Enjoy award-winning wines and meads. Visitors can also purchase artisan oils and balsamic vinegar.
Schulze Vineyard and Winery – 2090 Coomer Road, Burt
This 122-acre family-run and owned vineyard have been making its famous wine since 1969.

Enjoy award-winning Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Saparavi, Turan, and Blaufrankisch.
The Winery at Marjim Manor – 7173 East Lake Road, Appleton
A visit to this winery might give an encounter with spirits of a different kind. This winery is believed to be haunted.
