Lake Erie State Park

Lake Erie State Park is small park on top of large bluffs that over Lake Erie. The view from the top is exquisite and really something to behold (as long as you don’t have a fear of heights.) This park is a little bit out there but it is more than worth the drive. We visited in early spring and found the park completely deserted. It was so peaceful to have the place all to ourselves.

Beach

The real attraction of Lake Erie State Park is, of course, Lake Erie. The views here are spectacular. If you continue walking the shoreline you can wander under the bluffs and get an amazing up-close look at the Lake. Looking for that perfect sunset shot? This is the place.

On Lake Erie’s beach, visitors can sometimes find odd-shaped rocks called septarian concretions. These rocks have a shape and design similar to a tortoiseshell. If you are walking along the beach, keep your eyes peeled.

Many shipwrecks occurred in Lake Erie during the 1800s when commercial shipping was at its height. Many of which occurred in the proximity of Lake Erie State Park. Also, on a clear day (or if you have a keen eye) you can see Canada on the other side of the Lake.

Trails

There are several miles of great hiking trails within the park. Visit in the winter and you can cross-country ski or snowshoe to your heart’s content. The trails are spread out throughout the park and they traverse the woods and some even follow the along the top of the bluffs.

These trails are the perfect opportunity to part take in the top-notch nature watching available at Lake Erie State Park. This park is a paradise for birdwatchers. Lake Erie State Park is a haven for shorebirds and raptures of varying types. Bald Eagles are often spotted here flying over the cliffs. Lake Erie is a place where rare migratory birds rest during their journey.

The wetland and vernal pools in the north end of the park are home to salamanders, and if you come in the spring, you can possibly witness their migration.

Campground

New York State Parks always have great campgrounds. The sites are always decent-sized, clean, and well maintained. Lake Erie State Park is no exception. Several of the 99 campsites at Lake Erie are along the cliff’s edge. The campground is pretty wide open. If tent camping isn’t your speed, there are 10 cabins available to rent.

Other Activities

Canoe/Kayaking

Lake Erie State Park is a great place for kayaking and canoeing. You can put in right down at the beach and paddle up and down the shoreline.

Picnicking

There are a multitude of picnic tables and 2 picnic pavilions that can be rented. Some of the picnic tables are located right along the clifftop.

Getting to Lake Erie State Park

Lake Erie State Park is pretty easy to find. It is located on Route 5 approximately 6 miles west of the town of Fredonia.

Other Places to Visit

Eternal Flame Falls

The Eternal Flame Falls is by far one of my favorite and awe-inspiring hikes. This waterfall is a natural wonder. The Eternal Flame Falls has definitely become more well-known and popular in recent years.

Evangola State Park

Some places in New York State were just made for watching sunsets and Evangola State Park is one of them. Perched just perfectly on Lake Erie, this magnificent state park is perfect for enjoying everything that is beautiful about the nature of New York State.

Barcelona Falls

Barcelona Falls is not just beautiful, it’s completely stunning. It is unusual to have a waterfall right on a beach but that is exactly where this waterfall is located.
