I am constantly on the lookout for new and unique places, hidden gems and such, to visit, and I think this place fits the bill nicely, especially if you enjoy visiting the breathtaking marvels of Lake Ontario, lake bluffs. Although Scotts Bluff is one of the smaller of the Lake Ontario Bluffs, that is, in some ways, what makes it so charming. You can enjoy the same beauty as the bigger bluffs, as well as the beach, and the lake without the massive crowds.
Viewing The Bluff From Above
From the small parking area, it is a short and easy walk (along the mowed path) to the top of the Bluff. Pay attention and watch your step here, as there are some very steep drop-offs.
During our return visit, we found a narrow trail that continues along the top of the bluffs. This trail runs along the cliff’s edge, so please proceed at your own risk and use extreme caution. It’s a beautiful, wild area that offers incredible views of the bluffs and Lake Ontario.
Trail To The Bottom
Our first visit was during the winter, and the trail leading to the bottom was quite treacherous. It was covered in ice and steep, making it a challenge to reach the beach. I don’t recommend attempting to go down to the beach if there is ice on the trail. If you aren’t an agile hiker or don’t have the proper gear, it’s best to avoid the descent altogether. (I ended up sliding down on my bottom to avoid falling.)
On our return visit in the fall, the hike down was much easier. Although the trail was still narrow, it was clearer of bramble and easier to descend. The total trail to the bottom is actually quite short.
If you hike down to the beach or along the top of the bluffs, you do so at your own risk. We don’t encourage dangerous activity or behavior.
Walking The Beach
This area backs up to the Lakeshore Marshes Wildlife Management Area, and a separate body of water sits behind the beach. This is a lovely area, even in the winter when we first visited. This part of the beach is very different from the rest; the section that backs up to the Lakeshore Marshes is sandy. Along the shore is a graveyard of downed trees that have been bleached white by exposure to the elements.
When we returned in the fall, the trees along the Lakeshore Marshes were bursting with color. Of all the lake bluffs along Lake Ontario, I believe that Scotts Bluff has the best beach area.
The area, which includes the stretch of beach at Lakeshore Marshes, offers about a mile of beach to explore. The bluffs are stunning when viewed from the bottom. As this location is somewhat of a hidden gem, the beach is often more or less deserted.
If you decide to swim here, you do so at your own risk.
Getting To Scotts Bluff
