Hitting the beach is the best part about summer, and you won’t find a more pristine stretch of beach on crystal clear water than Cumberland Bay State Park. Whether you plan on spending a few days camping or just visiting for the afternoon, this park is one of the best places in New York State to have fun in the sun and cool off this summer.

Camping at Cumberland Bay
Cumberland Bay State Park camping ranges from pretty good to darn right excellent depending on what campsite you select. We found the campsites were all pretty open and lacked privacy. However, they all lacked something else, bugs! We visited during a very buggy time of year and found that this was one of the few Adirondack campgrounds that weren’t infested with masses of mosquitoes and deer flies. So while you might be able to see your neighbors, you aren’t fighting off hordes of insects.
Cumberland Bay has many large old trees throughout the campground, providing shade from the hot summer sun and adding a bit of ambiance to the setting. There are only a few beachfront campsites at this campground, but they are excellent sites that allow guests the best view of Lake Champlain.
Unlike other Adirondack Campgrounds, Cumberland Bay isn’t located in the middle of nowhere. It is in the town of Plattsburgh, so if you forget some of your camping gear, you don’t have to drive to the ends of the earth to find a store.
Day Use Area
There is a great Day Use Area that provides guests with picnic tables and grills and the use of the beach. This is an excellent place to hold a family reunion or just spend a lovely at the beach.
The Beach
The beach at Cumberland Bay is a nice wide and long stretch of soft sandy beach. There is plenty of room for people to spread out and enjoy the sun, sand, and water. There is no boat launch at Cumberland Bay, but people can launch canoes and kayaks here. The beach is protected by a jetty of land that creates Cumberland Bay. The water is shallow, so this is a great place for families to swim.
