The Powder Mill Park Fish Hatchery is a fun and educational place for families to bring children of all ages. Children enjoy seeing and feeding all the different fish. The Powder Mill Park Fish Hatchery was built in 1933. It has operated almost continuously since then, except for one year when it was closed due to budget cuts. It was re-opened thanks to a collaboration with The Riedman Foundation the following year.
The Fish at Powder Mill Park Fish Hatchery
There are several sizes of fish kept in this facility, from small fry (seriously, that is the actual name for baby fish) or fingerling to very large brown and rainbow trout. Once they reach an optimum size, these fish will eventually be released into Irondequoit Creek.
Feeding the Fish
Several food dispensers are situated around the concrete pools, where a handful of fish food can be purchased for $.25. That is where the fun comes in.
When food is tossed into the fish, they jump, splash, and swarm the food, which is an impressive sight to behold. Especially with the largest fish. It’s fun to watch and even more fun to participate. Be sure to bring enough quarters with you because our kids never got tired of throwing food to the fish. They spent a good hour feeding and observing the fish.
Hours of Operation
The Powder Mill Park Fish Hatchery is open all year round. It is staffed Monday-Friday from 7 AM-3: 30 PM and Weekends from 9 AM-1 PM.
