Some places in New York State were just made for watching sunsets and Evangola State Park is one of them. Perched just perfectly on Lake Erie, this magnificent state park is perfect for enjoying everything that is beautiful about the nature of New York State.

Great Views of Lake Erie
The view of the Lake from the cliff tops of Evangola is just amazing. We arrived several hours before sunset and even then, with the sun low in the sky, casting a glow over the lake and cliffside, it was breathtaking. We, unfortunately, didn’t stay to see the sunset, but Evangola is known for having some of the best sunset viewings of all of Lake Erie.
Lake Erie is the shallowest of the 5 Great Lakes with a maximum depth of 210 feet. The name comes from the Native Americans who once lived on its shore. Erie is a shortened version of the Iroquois word for “long tail.” The water quality at Evangola is some of the best on Lake Erie. According to water samples collected and tested, it is the 2nd cleanest area on Lake Erie. If you are looking to capture a gorgeous sunset over the Lake, you can’t find a better location than Evangola State Park.
Beach at Evangola
On a hot day, this beach is a popular one. The beach is large and exceptionally clean. A large section of the beach is sand-covered. Lifeguards are posted on the sandy portion of Evangola’s beach. There is also a magnificent strip of long shoreline to explore or just sit and relax and watch the waves. The shale cliffsides, through erosion, have been cut and chiseled into outstandingly beautiful outcroppings.
Wintertime Beauty
Evangola State Park is open year-round. One of the best times to visit is in the winter. Lake Erie frequently freezes over in the winter and even when it doesn’t, seeing it from the cliffs of the park is exquisite. Although I don’t recommend it, on particularly cold winters, people walk the snow and ice drifts on the lake. Visitors can experience the incredible raw beauty of winter while cross-country skiing or snowshoeing through the park. This park is truly transformed into a winter wonderland.
If you decide to explore, it is a good idea to wear microspikes or yaktrax.

Don’t let the ice and snow stop you from enjoying the breathtaking beauty of winter. These traction grips help outdoor adventurers explore icy terrain safely.
Evangola Park Facilities
Evangola State Park has some of the best picnic facilities around. There are large picnic pavilions available as well as an endless supply of picnic tables and grills. They dot the cliffside and are placed around the playground.
The Evangola also has numerous nature trails and the park often hosts a lot of fun family programs such as group nature hikes, bird watching, sandcastle building, dragonfly hunts as well as plenty of fishing-related activities.
Camping
While camping in any New York State Park is usually pretty good, camping at Evangola can be a unique experience. You have the opportunity to stay in one of the parks 6 yurts. The yurts accommodate up to six people, with 6 cots fitted with the mattress, as well as a refrigerator and microwave. This is a great option for those who aren’t crazy about tent camping.
Evangola has 80 campsites, which are fairly open with minimal privacy. There is not a lot of shade or much between each campsite to provide privacy or distinct borders. The campsites are also somewhat close together. There are three camping loops that accommodate both tent and RV camping.
