I want to start by saying that I never considered myself a big fan of The Wizard of Oz before visiting the museum. I grew up watching the 1939 movie every Easter, but I didn’t know much about it beyond that. However, this museum surpassed all my expectations and may have changed my perspective.
While our daughter was home visiting, we decided to go to the museum. She had us watch Wicked, as she was experiencing an “Oz moment” and wanted more. I had heard that L. Frank Baum was born in Chittenango and that there were Oz-related attractions in the area. After doing a little research, I discovered the All Things Oz Museum.
Visiting the All Things Oz Museum

My first and most important piece of advice is to take the guided tour! Normally, I don’t participate in guided tours, but in this case, I am so glad we did. There is so much to see in this museum, and without the tour, you might miss some of the incredible history it holds. The All Things Oz Museum may not be large in size, but it is vast in terms of historic artifacts, collectibles, pieces, and props. (There are QR codes available in the exhibits if you prefer not to take the guided tour.)
L. Frank Baum

First and foremost, this museum is the International L. Frank Baum & All Things Oz Historical Foundation. I was blown away by just how much L. Frank Baum achieved in his life. He was a writer, an actor, and a visionary. He wrote so many books, and not just in the Wizard of Oz canon. Under a number of pseudonyms, he penned numerous books.

Books, Movies, & Shows

This section of the museum truly amazed me. I had no idea how many books, shows, and movies have been inspired by the Wizard of Oz universe. It’s quite astounding! There’s so much to take in, and the museum features some really fascinating memorabilia.

Wicked

If you’re a fan of Wicked, you definitely need to include this museum on your must-visit list. It features an impressive exhibit dedicated to Wicked. My daughter even purchased a signed copy of the book from the museum’s gift shop.

1939 Wizard of Oz Movie

If you are a fan of the original Wizard of Oz movie starring Judy Garland, you’re in for a real treat. This section of the museum is amazing, featuring exhibits dedicated to each of the film’s main characters. The collection is both extensive and impressive.
After visiting the exceptional museum, I definitely gained a greater appreciation and excitement for The Wizard of Oz. Did I go home and immediately watch the original 1939 movie, searching for all the “Easter eggs” I had learned about during my tour? You bet I did!
