Exploring the Falls
One of the things that make the rivers and waterfalls in the Adirondack Region so incredible is the massive rocks. They create amazing breaks and dams in the water, making lots of splendid smaller waterfalls within the larger falls. Buttermilk Falls is really wide and almost takes up the width of the Raquette River.
From the trailhead, the falls are less than 1/10 of a mile away. While the ground is uneven, it isn’t a strenuous hike to get to falls. When the waterfall is flowing moderately, you can get to nearly the base of the falls from some really incredible pictures.
Hiking
While there isn’t much hiking that can be done here, there is a short hiking trail that leads down past the canoe carry-out point. It was quite muddy when we visited, but the view is spectacular. You can walk along the river a ways and appreciate the beauty of the area.
Picnicking
There is a lovely picnic area with tables and a fire pit that sits just above the falls. Even when there are lots of people at the falls, the picnic area seems empty. It is a nice place to relax and enjoy the scenery. There is a swimming area further downstream. Extreme caution should be taken if you plan to swim there, as there are no lifeguards.
