Name creativity is not common here in New York State. This is yet another Buttermilk Falls, the 4th one we’ve visited (This waterfall is also known as Spaulding Hill Road Falls.) Although this Buttermilk Falls is a little different from the others. When we visited, it was almost completely dry, but its staircase-like design allowed us to climb it and enjoy some of the most stunning natural beauty.

Please note: If you decide to climb the falls, you do so at your own risk. We do not encourage people to climb the falls and put their physical safety at risk.

Waterfall

The entire reason I wanted to visit this waterfall was that I had seen pictures of it, and it was gorgeous. It is one of those waterfalls that is just off the side of the road and fairly easy to get to. The falls are in a gorge-like setting. The rocky cliffside creates almost an amphitheater appearance.

If you look at the rocks closely, you can see fossils in places in the rocks.

I have seen different accounts on whether the falls are posted or not. (We do not encourage or condone trespassing.) According to other sites, such as AllTrails, this is a popular walk and not posted. We didn’t see any posted sign when we visited. If you decide to visit, please treat this wild area with respect, leave only footprints, and take only pictures.

Exploring The Glen

We visited during a drought, and the creek was almost completely dry, exposing the staircase-like structure of the waterfall. We decided to climb the dry Falls and explore the gorge a little bit. There are several tiers to these falls, and the surrounding gorge is indescribably beautiful. We do not recommend climbing the falls, especially if you aren’t an experienced hiker. The algae on the rocks can be slippery. Proper footwear here, such as hiking boots, is an absolute must.

Also nearby is a tunnel that leads under the road to the other side of the creek. If you explore this exquisite waterfall, please remember to leave no trace and keep this lovely place lovely for everyone who visits.

Getting to Buttermilk Falls

There is a small parking area on the shoulder of the road. If you walk to the middle of the guardrail, you will see a trail that leads down to the falls. This is a short, easy trail.
