Few places can boast of the notoriety that Sleepy Hollow can. Just the name brings one of the most famous Halloween figures leaping straight off the pages of Washington Irving’s famous story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Headless Horseman. This iconic character has been synonymous with Halloween since Irving first penned his famous work in 1820 and has remained a much-cherished symbol of Halloween.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Come to Life
It is incredible to realize that the very Sleepy Hollow Cemetery that exists today is the very same cemetery Ichabod Crane rode through in the iconic story. It is, in fact, a real place, complete with the bridge that he needed to cross to save himself from the Headless Horseman. The bridge in the cemetery is to this day called The Headless Horseman Bridge. This is not the same bridge that was here at the time Irving wrote his story; it has been replaced. However, the idea that one can follow the ride of one of literature’s most tragic protagonists is intriguing and fun.
Haunted Sleepy Hollow Cemetery
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow isn’t the only creepy thing about this cemetery. This old cemetery is said to be a place of extreme paranormal activity. People have reported walking through the cemetery and hearing strange disembodied voices that can’t be explained.
Old Dutch Church
Not only is the bridge portrayed in the story real, but so is the Old Dutch Church. This is something that is a real must-see. The church, built in 1697, remains one of the oldest standing buildings in New York State. The churchyard cemetery, just outside the church, holds amazing examples of 1600’s gravestones and funeral art. This is one of the few places in New York State where graves this old can be viewed. Although the churchyard appears as though it should be part of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, it actually is not. This really doesn’t matter much as they really are quite close together.
Famous Residents of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery
Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is the final resting place of some very famous historical figures, including the legendary wordsmith himself, Washington Irving. His grave and family plot can be found adjacent to the Old Dutch Church churchyard. A map can be obtained from the Washington Irving Chapel at the cemetery entrance. Other famous “residents” are Elizabeth Arden, Andrew Carnegie, Walter Chrysler, Harry and Leona Helmsley, and William Rockefeller.
