One of the by-products of our trip to the Catskills was a love for covered bridges. There are more covered bridges in the Catskill region than in any other area of New York State. The Downsville Covered Bridge also comes with a really lovely park that sits right on the East Branch of the Delaware River.

The Downsville Covered Bridge
The Downsville Covered Bridge was built in 1854 and is one of the longest covered bridges in New York State at 174.9 feet long. The bridge was restored in 1998 but not still has a weight limit and certain types of vehicles are not allowed to cross the bridge, such as trucks, and SUVs. This lowers the traffic crossing the bridge considerably, making this a popular bridge for visitors to walk on. This bridge was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1999.
Park on the River
The park at Downsville Bridge is glorious and perfect for a summer picnic. The park sits right on the eastern branch of the Delaware River. There is a gazebo and lots of picnic tables, grills, and park benches. This is one of the prettiest covered bridge parks that we have come across. I can see why people gravitate to this park.

Other Places to Visit
Little Pond State Campground
Little Pond Campground is one of the best-kept secrets in the Catskill Park. This DEC run campground is a natural oasis that offers stunning beauty and complete peacefulness that aid in that whole, “getting away from it all” experience
Russel Brook Falls
Waterfalls are one of my favorite destinations just because of their sheer natural beauty. I will hike to the ends of the earth to find a beautiful waterfall. In the case of Russell Brook Falls, that almost became a literal truth. This waterfall is breathtakingly gorgeous and truly worth all the trouble that we went to find it.
Tompkins Falls
Tompkins Falls was really magnificent and definitely worth the sojourn into the backroads of the northern Catskills. Fortunately for us, we were already camping at Little Pond Campground, so this waterfall was a hop, skip, and jump away from us.
