We are big fans of land trusts because they are hidden gems of protected lands that always have something special waiting for those who visit. The East Shore Preserve at Bare Hill was no exception. Although it is a small parcel of land, the pristine view of Canandaigua Lake is just magnificent.
A Short Hike
The hike down to the lake isn’t long at all, but it is quite steep. There are numerous steps leading down to the lake, which help to get down to the water and back up again. There are breaks in the trees, in spots, as you descend, providing spectacular views of Canandaigua Lake. We couldn’t help but stop and just take in the view.
This is not a hike for people with bad knees or balance issues, regardless of the shortness of the hike.
Lakeside Preserve
Once you reach the bottom, there is a small rocky beach. The signs state that swimming is not allowed, but it says nothing about wading. The beach has flat spots where visitors can lay out towels and soak up the sun, while enjoying an unobscured view of the lake, or even enjoy a picnic (as long as you clean up after and leave no trace.)
We spent quite some time lounging on the beach, listening to the lapping water. I can’t quite express what a tranquil place this small preserve is. There isn’t a great deal of boating traffic here and the beach is far enough from the road, that you can’t help but notice the complete quiet, outside of the sound of the lake itself. It was autumn when we visited, and the colors of the trees around the lake are dazzling.
Please note: There are private residences around the preserve, so please be respectful of those who live in the area, and do not trespass on the property outside the preserve.
Out and About With Nova
If you have a dog who enjoys playing in the water, as we do, this is a fantastic dog-friendly destination. Nova loved jumping in the gentle waves that rippled toward the beach. Even though this might seem like a great place to let your dog run off-leash, it is not permitted. Dogs are required to be leashed at all times here. Please also be respectful of other visitors by remembering to clean up after your pets and yourself.
Getting to East Shore Preserve at Bare Hill
This is not an easy preserve to locate. The sign for it is off the road, and can only be spotted from one direction (and you need to have your eyes peeled to see it). There isn’t much of a parking area there either; vehicles must pull off onto the shoulder of the road.
