I often use the term “hidden gem,” and I’ve found another place that truly fits the bill: Edwards Lake Cliffs. This 84 acre preserve offers stunning panoramic views of Cayuga Lake from the top of the cliffs, a mesmerizing 35-foot waterfall that cascades down the rocks, and miles of picturesque trails that wind through lush forests, tranquil meadows, and diverse habitats. It’s a fabulous destination that you’ll want to visit again and again.
Pocket Falls
Pocket Falls is a stunning natural wonder, showcasing a majestic 35-foot waterfall that gracefully descends into Shurger Glen. The cascading water creates a mesmerizing display of natural beauty. While the falls can only be observed from above, the trail offers an opportunity to gain a closer perspective as it winds past the falls, allowing visitors to gaze down into the narrow gorge and get an unobscured view of the falls.
The serene upper section of the creek, located above the falls, is a truly picturesque area. A small but charming waterfall cascades gently into the creek, surrounded by expansive flat rocks that lead into the water. This idyllic spot offers a perfect opportunity to sit and take in the beauty of the forest that envelops the creek.
Just a heads up, the trail to the falls can be muddy. We visited after several days of rain, and while the falls were incredibly full, the trail had spots of standing water and deep mud, especially as you get closer to the falls.
Lake Cliffs
The nature reserve also boasts stunning scenic overlooks of Cayuga Lake from the Tully limestone cliffs. What sets these cliffs apart is their unique ecosystem, which is rare in the Finger Lakes region. Visitors can enjoy several scenic viewpoints along the cliffside trail. We sat down on some rocks at the top of the cliff and soaked in the incredible panoramic view.
Trails
There are three trails at Edwards Lake Cliffs totaling 1.81 miles.
Red Trail – This is the trailhead, leading from the parking area and connects to the two other trails.
Blue Trail – This is the trail that leads to the waterfall. Keep an eye out for the blue blazes on the trees, because they are easy to miss. When you get to the meadow, look for an offshoot to the right, this leads to the falls.
Yellow Trail – This trail leads to the lake cliffs. This trail is very tree lined and exceptionally pretty, especially as you approach the cliffs.
Dogs are welcome here, but they must be leashed. Please clean up after your pets and take it with you.
Please Note: Edwards Lake Cliffs Preserve is closed during deer hunting season.
