Hickory Ridge Preserve (formerly West Hill Preserve), located in the heart of the Finger Lakes region in Naples, New York, boasts a stunning combination of natural beauty and diverse wildlife. Covering 550 acres, this preserve serves as a sanctuary for nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers alike. We were lucky enough to hit this preserve at the perfect time. The entire area was covered in a blanket of fog, making this forest look even more wild than it already was.
Wildlife

During our visit, we could hear the rhythmic drumming of ruffed grouse echoed through the forest. If you have never heard this before, it is quite unnerving. There is a loud thumping, followed by a sound that I can only describe as someone trying to start a lawn mower. These elusive birds, also known as partridges, are known for their distinctive mating displays and are a delight for birdwatchers. The preserve is home to over 150 bird species, including 10 species of hawks and falcons, 12 species of sparrows, and 20 species of warblers. The haunting “who cooks for you” call of the barred owl further enriches the auditory tapestry of this woodland sanctuary.

The Trails

There are three multi-use trails for mountain biking, hiking, and running at Hickory Ridge Preserve. This is The Nature Conservancy’s first shared-use trail system in New York. The initial 1/2 mil trail leading from the parking lot is graveled and basically flat. However, from there the trails in the preserve are dirt and can be extremely muddy after in rains. When visited in the spring and after a great deal of rain we found the trails especially muddy. We all left quite muddy, including our dog Nova.

The trails are not well marked with color blaze markers on the trees, but the path itself is clearly defined and reasonably wide. There are occasional sign placards along the trail with maps to assist you in navigating.

Green Trail – (2.8 miles) This trail is categorized as the easy trail, and it is just that. Although there is an elevation gain, you scarcely notice it.
Blue Trail – (3.4 miles) This trail is classified as moderate and is the longest one in the preserve. It features more rocky sections and a steeper incline compared to the Green Trail; however, I found it not significantly more challenging.
Black Trail – (0.7 miles) This trail is considered the most difficult and moves in only one direction. You can only enter the trail from the junction where the two sections of the Green Trail (Channery trail & Barred Owl trail) and two sections of the Blue Trail (Hemlock trail & Sanctuary trail) all intersect.

Out and About with Nova

Nova really enjoyed her time at the preserve! However, as I mentioned, she ended up quite muddy when we left. While she loved walking the trail, I don’t think I’ll take her back in the future because it’s a multi-use trail where fast-moving mountain bikes pass through. She can be reactive, and having people running past her or mountain bikes zipping by isn’t an ideal situation. If you decide to bring your dog, please remember that they need to be leashed and kept under control. Additionally, it’s essential (and respectful) to clean up after your pet and take the waste with you.
