The Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village is an “off the beaten path” destination unknown to me until just a few months ago. I happened across it by accident, and it was a fantastic find. This living history museum is located in Amherst, NY. The Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village not only has a really unique hands-on museum for the kids in the main museum building but is surrounded by numerous old restored buildings.
The Museum
The inside museum of the Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village has a replica of a boat that would have been sailed on the Erie Canal and a general store, an Inn, post office, and stable that children can play in. My children, who are by no means “little,” loved playing in this area. It was like a bunch of giant playhouses with tons of props. It was fun watching them go from building to building and reenact life from over 100 years ago. There were endless props that allowed kids to feel like they were back in the olden days. The Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village is fun for kids of all ages and covers many local histories.
Historic Village
The outside museum consists of 11 historic buildings from various time periods. Visitors can enter most of the buildings and get a first-hand idea of what life was like in Buffalo back in the 1800s. There is minimal staff at the museum and in the surrounding buildings. Due to this, we only ran into one or two staff members, but they were more than willing to answer questions and extremely friendly.
Animals at the Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village
We love animals. Any chance we get to cuddle up with one is a bonus for us, and this museum did not disappoint. We made the acquaintance of two adolescent cows, who were just as adorable as they could be. The little cows were very friendly, and it just added another element of fun to this beautiful museum.

The Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village is smaller than the Genesee Country Museum (Mumford, NY) but along the same lines. This is a definite must-see if you are into living history. It’s a fun museum for the entire family. The museum is only open during the late spring, summer, and early fall.
