Boardwalk
One of the most idyllic features of Labrador Hollow is the boardwalk. The boardwalk takes visitors through wetlands and a pine forest at the north end of Labrador Pond. The boardwalk wraps around to bring visitors to a magnificent view of Labrador Pond. This is an excellent spot for bird watching and spotting wildlife. Over 107 species of birds have been spotted in Labrador Hollow, including turkey, ruffed grouse, woodcock, and it is a nesting grounds for Osprey.
We paid a visit to Labrador Hollow during the winter, and we found the boardwalk and frozen pond absolutely enchanting. It was like walking in a winter wonderland with the snow clinging to the pine trees and covering the boardwalk.
The Labrador Hollow Boardwalk is universally accessible, as wheelchairs and strollers can traverse it with ease. However, wintertime might be more of a challenge with the snow.
Labrador Pond and Boat Launch
Not far from the boardwalk parking area is a car-top boat launch on the west side of the pond. Labrador Pond is fairly shallow, with an average depth of about 4 feet. Motorized boats are not permitted on the 100-acre pond, making it ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and standup paddleboarding.
If you are looking for a quiet place to fish, there is a fishing pier not far from the boardwalk parking lot. Fish species found in the pond are small yellow perch, pumpkinseed, bluegills, largemouth bass, and brown bullheads.
To reach the fishing pier, turn left from the boardwalk parking area onto Labrador Cross Road. Then, turn left on Markham Hollow Road. Proceed about 0.5 miles south down the road along the western shore.
Jones Hill Scenic Overlook and Hang Glider Launch
Another popular destination at Labrador Hollow Unique Area is Jones Hill. There is an impressive scenic overlook at the top where visitors can get a fantastic view of the area including Labrador Pond. The Jones Hill Scenic Overlook is also a hang-glider launch spot.
The hike to the top is only 1 mile, but the incline is steep so at times it felt more like 2 miles. Once you get to the top, it is an amazing view and you can get a bird’s eye view of the Pond and the boardwalk. If you have the stamina to make it up the hill, I highly recommend it.
Trails
Several hiking trails traverse the Labrador Hollow Unique Area, and many of them connect to other state forests in the area, such as the Skyline Trail that connects Labrador Hollow to the Morgan Hill State Forest, Kettlebail State Forest, and Heiberg Memorial Forest. A section of the North Country Trail passes through the park as well. The 4,600-mile trail goes from Middlebury, Vermont, to Lake Sakakawea State Park in North Dakota.
This area is also popular for cross country skiing and snowshoeing.
Tinker Falls
This is one of the shining highlights of Labrador Hollow Unique Area. This hanging waterfall is beautiful and easy to get to with a short 1/2 mile hike. In addition, this is one of the only places in the area where ice climbing is permitted.
We returned to see this beautiful waterfall this summer, unfortunately, it was only just trickling. It was still really beautiful and being able to climb up and walk around the cave. The cave is what makes this waterfall amazing.
