Mooney’s Sports Bar and Grill’s claim to fame is that it is “Home of the Mac n’ Cheese” and I love Mac n’ Cheese! Who am I kidding…I just love cheese. Period. So this gem of a restaurant definitely piqued my interest when I heard about it. Mooney’s Sports Bar and Grill was very quickly added to the tippy top of my must-try restaurant list.
(Full Disclosure-We make it a point to never tell anyone at any restaurant that we are Adventures in New York because we want to have the same experience you would have when visiting.)
Mac n’ Cheese Galore!
I knew before I walked in the door exactly what kind of Mac n’ Cheese I was going to order. Although when I got a glance at the menu, I had to pause and really think if I was wedded to my choice. With literally 30 different kinds of mac n’ cheese, I will admit I was a bit overwhelmed and was beginning to wish I had a bigger stomach.
All the varieties of mac n’ cheese sounded completely delectable and scrumptious like Taco, Philly Cheesesteak, Cajun Shrimp, Buffalo Chicken, Deluxe Bacon Cheeseburger, Beef on Weck, Pizza, and Spinach Artichoke, Just to name a few. Our waitress told us that if we could make a sandwich out of it, they could make it into a mac n’ cheese for us. I ordered the Lobster Mac n’ Cheese which was just out of this world.
Beyond Mac n’ Cheese
Before you head over to one of Mooney’s 9 locations to get some yummy food, make sure you put on your loosest pair of pants, preferably something with an elastic waist. The portions they serve are without a doubt the biggest I’ve seen anywhere. I ordered a side of Lobster Mac n’ Cheese and I swear it weighed as much as a newborn baby! It was enormous. I barely made a dent. I brought it home and gave some to my daughter and froze three containers to enjoy at a later date (which incidentally ended up being lunch for the next three days. I thought I might be able to exercise more restraint but it was just so damn good!)
If mac n’ cheese isn’t your thing, have no fear. Mooney’s has you covered. They have an extensive menu that goes well beyond mac n’ cheese. An amazing selection of appetizers, sandwiches, wraps, several varieties of grilled cheese, soups, salads, a unique variety of wings, fish, enormous tacos, fajitas, and of course a kiddie menu the little ones will flip for. My husband tried their award-winning garbage plate, which was a bit different from the typical garbage plates we’ve encountered. Instead of burgers, they made it with BBQ pulled pork. It was nothing short of divine.
Excellent Service and Great Prices
Mooney’s has 8 locations across upstate New York and they pride themselves on hiring exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. Our bartender made me one of the best margaritas I’ve had in ages. At first glance, the menu prices might seem high, but when you consider how much food they are giving you, we thought they were extremely reasonable. There is no way you can finish everything on your plate. My husband is a big eater and even he brought his home and had lunch for the next two days (much to his delight.)
I will definitely be returning to try some of the other mac n’ cheese and I will be wearing my sweatpants when I do.
