Moose River is one of the most gorgeous rivers that I have found. We accidentally stumbled upon this splendid river because we decided to follow the road of the same name. Enormous rocks fill this river and make it a fun place to explore. My kids loved climbing on the rocks and getting to the giant islands that are located here and there throughout the river.

Scenic Drive

We were on a mission to see a moose while we were here in the Adirondacks, so seeing a road with the name moose on it was pretty enticing. Unfortunately, we never did see our moose, but this river and the scenic drive almost more than made up for it.

Moose River Road is a twisty-turny road that is all wooded with openings that show picturesque views of the River. In the autumn, this road is especially impressive, featuring multitudes of trees with changing leaves. There are deep reds, oranges, and yellows as far as the eye can see. There are also pine forests that line the road and add just the most amazing smell to the air.

Every few miles, there are parking areas so that you can pull off and go explore the River. These spots usually have some pretty amazing views and are great places to get into the river and scout out the territory.

Relaxing on the River

We had a blast climbing on the giant rocks and walking through the Moose River. The landscape was extremely impressive, and I must have taken 1000 photos. However, they just can’t do it justice. This place was unlike anywhere I had ever been, and I could have just spent the entire day walking through the water.

We noticed lots of people had the same idea, but there was so much room to spread out that we didn’t crowd each other. We saw people enjoying all sorts of activities on Moose River. Some were walking like us; others were fly fishing. And some were sunbathing and picnicking. Whatever way they decided to spend it, the sunshine and beautiful setting made for a great afternoon.

Getting There

We followed Route 28 southeast through Old Forge and then the town of Thendara. Moose River Road is a left off of Route 28 about 2 miles or so outside Thendara. Follow Moose River Road, and you will see various places to park on the side of the road with paths that will take you down to the River.
