Winter Festival of Lights

Medina Old Tyme Christmas & Parade of Lights

Live Nativity Hayride

This unique hayride will take you on a narrated journey to experience some of the key events before and after the birth of Jesus Christ. You will travel back in time and encounter these scenes:

  • The angel Gabriel visiting Mary
  • The Roman soldiers taking a census of people

  • The shepherds in the fields and their visit by the angels

Drive Thru Live Nativity

Experience a re-enactment of the original Christmas Eve from the comfort of your vehicle.  Drive through the church parking lot, and view shepherds and their sheep as they receive the angels’ message of “glory to God”.  Roman soldiers will be ready to direct you through the town where you will see the busy Bethlehem market place, the Inn which had no room, and the stable where Mary and Joseph had to stay. This event is free.

A Dicken’s Christmas has been a long-time Skaneateles tradition. Each year beginning Thanksgiving weekend, a large cast of Dicken’s clad performers fill the downtown area of Skaneateles. The holiday weekends leading up to Christmas are filled with activities, music, and fun.

Medina Railroad Museum Themed Train Rides

The Polar Express

Once onboard, hot chocolate and treats are served as passengers read along with the classic children’s book, The Polar Express, by Chris Van Allsburg. StarShine 2024

The 39th Annual StarShine will take place in the Village of Penn Yan on Saturday, December 7th from 3 pm -6 pm.

The Village of Penn Yan comes to life each winter where local and visitors gather and celebrate “StarShine, Christmas in the Village”. This popular event started over three decades ago and has grown to become one of the most popular community Christmas celebrations in the Finger Lakes.

The evening hosts a variety of music, entertainment, colorful lights, treats, historic displays, an elf school, special sales, the arrival of Santa, and the crowning of Miss Penn Yan. Holiday Gnome Roam

The Gnomes have returned to the Nature Center for the winter, and for two weekends only you join their holiday festivities!

On Fridays, December 13 & 20 and Saturdays, December 14 & 21, join us for a lantern-lit, nighttime walk around the Gnome Roam, a .75 mile woodland loop. During this magical evening event, the trail will be full of twinkling lights and industrious gnomes getting ready for the holiday festivities.

The Castle By Candlelight

Old Fort Niagara assumes a particularly festive air during the holiday season. Special activities kick off on Saturday evenings, December 7 and 14 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., as the Fort presents The Castle by Candlelight, a tour of the Great Lakes’ oldest building illuminated entirely by candles. Throughout the Castle, visitors will encounter members of the Fort’s 18th century garrison demonstrating everything from quill pens to fur trading to traditional games of skill.

Twice each evening the garrison turns out to perform a grand feu de joie (firing of joy), a rolling fire of muskets and cannons. Cooks demonstrate 18th century holiday recipes, musicians play popular songs of the era and a Recollet priest reads the Christmas story in Latin in the Fort’s 298-year-old chapel. Visitors to the event can make a holiday ornament and a bird feeder and enjoy Native American songs and stories.

In the fort’s log cabin visitors can warm up and enjoy hot refreshments which will be available for purchase. Menu items include bread pudding, soup, hot chocolate, coffee and tea.

A Magical Christmas Adventure

Decked out in Christmas splendor, The Lodge will host Santa and Mrs. Claus, as they bring holiday wonder to Hidden Valley.

You and your family will first make memories in Santa’s Wonderland with Mrs. Claus decorating her favorite butter cream cookies, writing letters of Christmas wishes to Santa, and visiting with him to take holiday photos. 

Next, you will step outside The Lodge to Kris Kringle Station (lower level), where you will board your trolley and be transported to Hidden Valley’s Mystical Forest.

Your (20 minute) journey will take you pass herds of bison and elk. You’ll also see Randy the camel, llamas, and a flock of blackbelly sheep roaming the wintery terrain.

Back at the station, feed and pet a variety of live animals in open-air stalls on the patio just outside The Trailside Grill. Biff the Bison and Zoey the Zebra will be there to help!

The holidays are fast approaching and there’s no better way to get into the spirit than by spending some time in Allegany State Park. Join the Environmental Education Department on Saturday, December 7th for a fun, festive, family event- Saturday with Santa!

The big day starts at 11:00 a.m. in the Red House area of the park with Santa’s parade starting at 11:30am. Santa will pass by Camp Allegany and the Administration building on his way to the Red House picnic shelter. Stop by and hang a couple of ornaments on the big tree in the Red House Administration Building, write a letter to Santa and have cup of hot chocolate and a cookie. The Red House Museum will be out quiet Holiday room for those that need a break from the lights and sounds of the season. Camp Allegany, site of Santa’s Workshop, is open from 11:00am – 3:00pm. Make crafts, design your own button, play games, take pictures in the festive photo booth and other fun activities. Take part in the Allegany State Park Historical Society coloring contest in the Recreation Hall. The Red House Picnic Area Shelter will become a winter wonderland to make Santa feel at home during his short break from duties at the North Pole. He will be greeting and taking photos with children from 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Don’t forget to make your way back to Camp Allegany for the announcement of the coloring contest winner at 2:45 p.m.

Christmas Stroll in Ellicottville

Celebrate the Holiday Season with a Living Nativity, complete with a camel, all in the Village. The Ellicottville  A Christmas Stroll was created in 1987 by a group of citizens who wanted to organize such an event in the village. After brainstorming over coffee, it was decided that they wanted a live nativity scene with children dressed as angels and shepherds, who walked around the village and met at the gazebo. There, the baby Jesus was presented and caroling presided. The tradition has continued on for the past 36 years.

The 68th Annual Holiday Greens Show “A Visit From St. Nicholas”

Presented by the Van Rensselaer Garden Club and hosted by the Hart Cluett Museum, the 68th Annual Holiday Greens Show is Decking the Halls with Music!

Light Up The Village

Every year, the Village of Lake George is lit by thousands of lights to celebrate the holiday season. This completely free event in Shepard Park will feature horse-drawn carriage rides, refreshments, and more beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Bobby Dick and Susie Q will hold a family-friendly holiday sing-along at 5:00 p.m. The first annual Ugly Sweater Contest will be held in the Shepard Park Amphitheater with the winner taking home a $250 prize.

At 6:00 p.m. everyone will gather in Shepard Park to ignite the thousands of light displays. A spectacular fireworks show over the lake will follow the lighting. After the displays are turned on, head to Canada Street for the third annual Holiday Lighted Fire Truck Parade to see colorfully decorated vehicles from local fire companies. 2024 Christmas on Main Street: Old Forge

Come visit us Thanksgiving weekend to kick off the holiday season with friends and family. Area clubs, civic groups and businesses have planned an unforgettable family experience. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be in town, and families will be treated to old fashioned horse-drawn wagon rides, tree lighting, a light parade, face painting, Zoo Mobile, pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus, Candy Cane Hunt, Reindeer Fun Run and more! All free of charge!

Additional venues are also available for your enjoyment. Including the Santa Express Train, holiday arts and crafts at View and Ace Hardware. Keep your antlers on from the Reindeer Run, the fun doesn’t stop there – wear your antlers into the special holiday 2pm matinee at the Strand Theater and receive a free small popcorn and 1/2 price matinee.

Winter Weekends at the North Pole

Parents can treat their kids to something special during the holiday season at the North Pole, where they can enjoy the magic of a Christmas Village and visit the big man himself at Santa’s Workshop! Enjoy caroling, our fire pit’s “roaring fire”, visit the shops as well as the reindeer and put in that last request to Santa himself. Lastly, don’t miss the Nativity Pageant presentation, set on the village hillside. In all, a wonderful way to capture the “spirit of the season” right here at Santa’s Workshop.

A North Country Festival of Trees

A North Country Festival of Trees will once again kickoff the holiday season by offering an online tree auction and in-person tree viewing at Salmon Run Mall (in the former BonTon space, located near the Billy Beez end of the mall).  All trees on display are hand-decorated by community members and are available for bidding for purchase or donation.
